CFCs and Fridges & Freezers
Is this still an issue for modern appliances?
Chlorofluorocarbons, more widely known by their acronym CFCs, are a type of gas that was used widely in the manufacture of fridges and freezers. When CFCs are released into the environment, they destroy the Ozone layer (a protective layer in the earth's atmosphere that shields us from harmful rays from the sun).
The good news is; using CFCs in fridges and freezers was phased out globally as part of 'The 1987 Montreal Protocol'.
Now for the bad news: The gases that replaced CFCs in fridges and freezers are far less harmful to the ozone layer, but they are potent greenhouse gasses - increasing the effects of climate change.
(For the science enthusiasts out there, these chemicals are called; hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)).
