CFCs and Fridges & Freezers
Is this still an issue for modern appliances?
Chlorofluorocarbons, more widely known by their acronym CFCs, are a type of gas that was used widely in the manufacture of fridges and freezers. When CFCs are released into the environment, they destroy the Ozone layer (a protective layer in the earth's atmosphere that shields us from harmful rays from the sun).
The good news is; using CFCs in fridges and freezers was phased out globally as part of 'The 1987 Montreal Protocol'.
Now for the bad news: The gases that replaced CFCs in fridges and freezers are far less harmful to the ozone layer, but they are potent greenhouse gasses - increasing the effects of climate change.
(For the science enthusiasts out there, these chemicals are called; hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)).

Ensure you use a reputable Waste Removal Company.Fridges and freezers must be taken to a processing centre, either run by a local authority or a commercial entity. These centres are licensed and trained on the correct handling and processing of fridges and freezers to ensure that any harmful chemicals are contained and do not leak into the environment.

There may be cheaper companies but I was impressed with Tony's professionalism and the knowledge that the soil was responsibly dealt including the provision of a Duty Of Care Waste Transfer Note. Tony and his team were amazing. I had a big American fridge freezer that could not fit through the doors on our property. Phoning around I was quoted as much as £700 just to remove and place on my drive. Tony came at much more of a reasonable amount and that was for the removal of the fridge included. They were in and out in under 30 minutes with quite a few complexities. Lovely lads too would recommend them to anyone. Thank you so much guys really appreciate your help.

Booked Tony's team in to remove a large garden outbuilding and I can't speak highly enough of them! Comms before was excellent and clear. A brilliant job removing a huge amount of garden waste and tidying up our compost heap.The job: inspect the existing compost area of our garden, identify the amount of garden waste to be removed, assess the means by which the waste would be removed and quote for the cost of doing so. That was all done within a couple of days of our enquiry. We recognised that it would cost quite a lot, but we thought the quotation was fair given the manpower and other resources required.Surrey Waste Removal specialises in house clearance and garden waste clearance. The managing director, Tony Spreckley, communicated very effectively and offered a date for work to be done including the delivery and collection of a skip. He turned up with 2 colleagues on the day and at the time agreed. They were clearly very experienced with this sort of job. They worked very hard clearing the waste and were very friendly, polite and courteous while doing so. They also cleared up carefully afterwards including raking the ground from which the garden waste had been removed leaving everything neat and tidy. Finally, Mr Spreckley provided the appropriate “Duty of Care – Waste Transfer Notes”. This was a heavy job carried out brilliantly well – 5 stars!

So many places wanted photos beforehand, non refundable deposits, to come view items first! Look I get it lots of people lie and recycling some items might be tricky. But for honest, hard working people who just want a few items removed it feels like you have to do so much work and prove you aren’t lying just to get someone to come and some also quoted ludicrous figures for a chair and few mats! Dealing with Tony who called us back was a far superior experience. He trusted what I was telling him, arranged a prompt collection and did not require an upfront payment. Surrey Waste Removal came and took away old carpet & underlay from three rooms in our house. The carpet will be shredded & then incinerated, with the energy created going into the national grid! AMAZING! So much better than putting old carpet into landfill. The cost for us was £75 which was less than 5% of the cost of our new carpets. I believe this is a fair price for the excellent service. The company will take away all types of household waste & recycle where possible. I shall definitely be using them again & I highly recommend them.
